High-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body and steel frame

High-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body and steel frame

Military-grade, aluminum-alloy body —it’s the same 5,000/6,000-series high-strength grade used in the aerospace, commercial transportation and energy industries. Our objective: reduce weight while increasing strength. What’s more, aluminum-alloy is resistant to dents and corrosion.

The fully boxed frame has eight crossmembers (five through-welded) and is made of up to 78 percent high-strength steel. And while stronger and more rigid, this frame is lighter by up to 60 lbs. (27 kg)* because many of the components are fabricated using state-of-the-art roll forming and tailor-rolled blanks.

*Over the previous generation.
Torture-Testing the Next-Generation F-150

Torture-Testing the Next-Generation F-150

Our goal in building the current Ford F-150 was to set the industry bar for durability for years to come. So we subjected it to over 16 million kilometres of cumulative torture testing – in labs, at proving grounds, over high-altitude passes and through desert valleys, while hauling huge loads and towing heavy trailers at temperature extremes from -28 to 48 degrees Celsius.

Today’s F-150 is not only light in weight, it offers:

  • Best-in-class hauling capability*.
  • Better power-to-weight ratio for faster acceleration and greater pulling power than previous generation.
  • More responsive handling**.
  • Quicker braking**.
  • And even greater efficiency†.

*When properly equipped. Maximum payloads of 3,270 lbs for F-150 4x2 with available 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine. Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR based on Ford segmentation.

**When properly equipped with available 3.5L EcoBoost® 4x2. Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. (3,855 kg) GVWR based on Ford segmentation. Versus previous generation prior to 2015.

†Government of Canada-estimated rating of 12.2L/100 km (23 mpg) city, 9.3L/100 km (30 mpg) hwy, and 10.9L/100 km (26 mpg) combined2, 2.7L EcoBoost®, 4x2. Actual mileage will vary. Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. (3,855 kg) GVWR. Based on Ford segmentation.
