You’ve found the new vehicle you love, now it’s time to figure out financing: whether to lease or purchase, what the differences are, and what to expect from your ownership experience.

What to Know Before You Buy a Ford

Ready to start shopping for your new vehicle? Whether you’re looking online or visiting your local Ford dealership, explore our FAQ to discover what you need to know.

Nothing! It’s great to do your research beforehand, but Ford dealers are used to working with people at every shopping stage.

If you are early in your purchasing journey, treat a visit to a Ford Store like you would any in-person shopping experience. You can check out different models and colours and get a better idea of the size of the vehicles you are interested in.

As you get closer to your purchase, it could be helpful to have a contact at your local dealership who can assist you in narrowing down your options and finding the right Ford for you.

If you want to get a better sense of your financing options with no obligation or credit  impact, get prequalified now to gauge your purchasing power.

If you’re still exploring different vehicles you’re interested in, all you need to bring to the dealership is yourself–and your driver’s license to test drive a vehicle.

When you’re ready to purchase your new vehicle, you may want to bring:

  • Pre-approval notification, if you have one
  • Driver’s license (or government ID)
  • Proof of income: paystubs or a letter of employment
  • Proof of residence: apartment lease, bank statement, pay stub, or utility bill showing your name and address
  • Proof of vehicle insurance
  • Source of down payment
  • Trade-in: vehicle title, registration, all original equipment

At the time of vehicle financing, your dealer will take you through optional coverage programs such as maintenance and extended service plans. These can provide relief from unexpected expenses and are commonly referred to as “add-on” products. Purchasing add-on products is optional, and the cost can typically be included in the financing. Cost, coverage, limits, and exclusions vary by provider–be sure to ask your dealer for details.

Ford also has a range of accessories to help you customize your vehicle to fit your lifestyle. Explore these options at the time of purchase, when you may be able to include them in your financing.
