F-150 Lightning™ Charging Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The following are answers to some of the most common questions about charging the Ford F-150 Lightning.

F-150 Lightning Charging FAQs

What charging options are available with the F-150 Lightning?

  • The Mobile Power Cord, capable of 30 Amps (A) charging on a 240 Volt (V) and 120V outlet, comes standard with the 2022 F-150 Lightning and is available for purchase (through your Ford Dealer) with the 2023 model year F-150 Lightning.
  • The F-150 Lightning's extended-range battery and included 80A Ford Charge Station Pro charging equipment (which requires professional installation) provides the fastest home charge, connected features and available Ford Intelligent Backup Power*.

For more information on charging options, visit Fordcharging.ca.

What charge level is recommended for daily driving of the F-150 Lightning?

Ford recommends that you charge to 90% for everyday driving and charge to 100% when you need the full range for a trip. Charging to 90% helps prolong the life of your battery.

What is the power of the F-150 Lightning onboard chargers (OBC)?

The standard-range OBC input is 11.3 kilowatts (kW) and the extended-range dual OBC is 19.2kW. Vehicle onboard chargers limit the amount of power a vehicle can accept during charge events. Therefore, you should consider your onboard charger capability with the power capability of your charge equipment, as well as the spare power of your home energy circuit, when deciding which is the right home charging solution for you.

Visit the F-150 Lightning page for more information.

Can the F-150 Lightning charge other electric vehicles (EVs)?

Yes, with the Mobile Power Cord and an additional aftermarket adapter (P/N 691944Y sold separately by Parkworld), the Pro Power Onboard feature will allow the F-150 Lightning with the 9.6kW option and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid with the 7.2kW option to charge other J1772-equipped EVs.

How fast can the F-150 Lightning charge?

Using a 150kW+ DC fast charger, the standard-range 98kWh pack can charge from 15-80% in about 36 minutes. The extended-range 131kWh pack can charge from 15-80% in 41 minutes**.

What is the charging power for the F-150 Lightning?

The extended-range F-150 Lightning vehicles are both alternating current (AC) and DC adaptable with a 19.2kW onboard charger and are designed to charge quickly on a DC fast charger, allowing a controlled boost up to 155kW. The standard-range F-150 Lightning vehicles are also AC and DC adaptable with an 11.3 kW onboard charger and are designed to charge quickly on a DC fast charger, allowing controlled boost up to 120kW**.

What is the right home charging solution for me?

Go to the F-150 Lightning page to learn more about home charging options and which Ford charging solutions come with your F-150 Lightning or are available for purchase. Also, visit the Qmerit website to get set up with a local licensed electrician who can provide installation quotes and get your home ready to charge.

How much does it cost to install the Ford Charge Station Pro?

Visit the Qmerit website for more installation information and receive a cost range per installation option. Home charging installation costs cannot be financed with Ford Credit. The Ford Charge Station Pro is included as charging equipment with the extended-range battery. Installation is not included.

Can I use Ford’s Intelligent Backup Power with a competitor solar or battery setup (like Tesla Powerwall)?

Visit Qmerit's website to have a local licensed electrician review your current solar or battery setup to see if it is compatible with the Ford Charge Station Pro for the Ford Intelligent Backup Power.

Note: The Ford Charge Station Pro would need to be installed with the Home Integration System (planned 2024 availability).

What happens if I run out of charge on the road with my F-150 Lightning?

Ford Roadside Assistance can help. You can choose to have your vehicle towed to either the closest public charging station, the nearest participating Ford EV-certified Dealer, or your home residence. If outside of a 25 kilometre radius, Roadside will tow the vehicle to the nearest available charging station among the three options. Ford Roadside Assistance is included with your F-150 Lightning for five years/100,000 kilometres (from date of sale to whichever comes first), with the option to extend after that.

Can I charge at a 350kW charge station?

Yes. Some DC fast chargers can deliver up to 350kW of power, but your Ford all-electric vehicle will only accept up to 120kW or 155kW, depending on if you have the standard-range or extended-range battery, respectively.

Can non-Ford vehicles charge with Ford’s home chargers?

Yes, the Ford Mobile Power Cord and Ford Connected Charge Station use the J1772 plug, which is the North American industry standard. It works for most all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles using the industry standard J1772 connector. There is an aftermarket adapter for Teslas to charge on J1772 charge plugs.

Note: The Ford Charge Station Pro uses a Combined Charging System (CCS) plug. Therefore, the Ford Charge Station Pro can only charge an all-electric vehicle that uses the CCS connector (commonly used at public DC fast charging locations).

What information do I need to provide to my licensed electrician for a home charging installation quote?

Ford recommends working with Qmerit for your home charging installation needs. If you want to use your own qualified electrician, you can provide the Mobile Power Cord or Ford Charge Station Pro installation specification sheet  to their electrician to support an installation quote. You will also have the option to purchase the Home Integration System from Qmerit (planned availability 2024). Visit the F-150 Lightning Charging page for more information.

When can I start the home charging installation process?

Ford recommends working with Qmerit for your home installation needs, but you can also use your own qualified electrician. If you want to get your home charging installed prior to vehicle delivery, you will have the option to do so.

Not at this time, but you can charge the Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit on the Ford Charge Station Pro. Note: Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit will charge at the 48A rate even on the 80A charger due to the vehicles’ onboard chargers.

How much does the Home Integration System cost?

Pricing on the Home Integration System will be shared in 2024.
